CSci Tutor Room Opens in Fall 2024

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering has launched a new service in the fall of 2024 which will aid undergraduate students in entry-level computer science courses. The CSci Tutor Room provides a range of services that support student academic development in computer science, with services designed to help students strengthen their coding skills, collaborate with peers, and grow as problem-solvers and technologists.

Through partnerships with faculty and staff, the CSci Tutor Room aims to cultivate a learning environment that meets the unique needs of computer science students and empower them to achieve their academic and career goals. This new endeavor will work to build lasting connections between students currently enrolled in CSci intro courses and senior student mentors. This unique service was made possible by contributions from Target and donors of the 2023 Give to the Max campaign.

The CSci Tutor Room will be managed by two CSci Peer Tutors - Nhi Dang and Sebastian Helgeson. Dang is a senior double majoring in computer science and mathematics. She is passionate about theoretical computer science, (system) software engineering, and the mathematics behind machine learning. Helgeson is a senior in computer science with a focus on robotics and a minor in product design. He is interested in human-robot interaction and embodied computing.

Students can schedule an appointment online for the CSci Tutor Room. Current University of Minnesota - Twin Cities students who are enrolled in CSci 1133, CSci 1933, or CSci 2011 may schedule an appointment with a CSci Peer Tutor. One-to-one appointments are available in either 30 or 60 minute time slots and provide individualized tutor support. During an appointment, a CSci Peer Tutors will aim to help students gain confidence with key course concepts through one-to-one help sessions. Students will also receive support and feedback on practice problems, identify effective studying strategies, and get connected with additional UMN support resources.
