Big news! CS graduate programs no longer require the GRE

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering is excited to announce that our Computer Science M.S. and Computer Science Ph.D. programs no longer require, nor accept, the GRE exam as part of our application process.

"We're proud to join a wave of computer science departments making this change," said Associate Professor Daniel Keefe, the head of the department's Inclusiveness, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy (CS-IDEA) committee. "This concrete action is a step towards addressing the longstanding underrepresentation of key demographics within the computing field."

This decision to remove the GRE from the admissions process is part of our ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts within the department. We believe this change will provide broader access and opportunity to a larger community of prospective students, from traditionally marginalized and underrepresented students to students who are and will continue to be impacted by the current global pandemic.

We agree with and strive to incorporate the assertion made by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi (How to Be an Antiracist) on this matter:

What if we realized the best way to ensure an effective educational system is not by standardizing our curricula and tests, but by standardizing the opportunities available to all students?

CS&E hopes that removing this requirement will allow for many more students to consider and pursue graduate education programs.
