Professor Terveen inducted into the CHI Academy
Distinguished McKnight Professor Loren Terveen has been selected to join the CHI Academy, one of the highest honors in the field of human-computer interaction. Researchers who get inducted into the CHI Academy are considered the principal leaders of the field, whose efforts have shaped the discipline and/or industry.
"I am thrilled to see Loren join this distinguished group and get this well received recognition,” said Department Head Mats Heimdahl. “I must also mention that Loren joins CS&E professor Joe Konstan and CS&E alumnus Ed Chi, who are also in the academy. This is a clear testament to the international leadership of the HCI group at the University of Minnesota."
Professor Terveen’s work in human-computer interaction has helped reveal emergent biases in peer production and sharing economy systems like Wikipedia, Uber, Google, Facebook, and Twitter. For more than two decades, Professor Terveen has looked at how these systems work, what problems they might have, and how they have improved over time. His fundamental experimental and theory-building research has developed key technologies and understandings behind these critical systems.
An important theme underlying Professor Terveen’s work is that his research often addresses problems of social concern. He has identified ubiquitous problems in how today’s technology operates and has created innovative solutions, such as developing new algorithms and interfaces to improve social interactions among users that draw attention to areas that need more work. Essentially, he has created a new means of knowledge production and work organization that aids many communities.
"I'm very honored by receiving this award,” said Professor Terveen. “And I'm so grateful to all my collaborators and students who have played crucial roles in my work -- I could not have done it without them."
Professor Terveen joins a select group of thought leaders and innovators who have made substantial contributions to HCI. He and the other inductees will be formally recognized at the CHI 2019 conference in Glasgow, Scotland in May.
Please join the Department in extending our sincerest congratulations to Professor Terveen on this outstanding achievement.
