Park receives NSF CAREER Award

Assistant Professor Hyun Soo Park received the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) CAREER award. The award supports junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research. Park received the award for his proposed project, titled “CAREER: Raster Multiview Algebra for Unlabeled Visual Data Exploration.”

With the proliferation of cameras of all types virtually everywhere and which continuously record everyday actions and interactions, Park and his team have found there is not an easy way for everyday users of cameras to use all of this visual data in a productive way.  Park’s research seeks to develop such a computer vision system that can learn from personal visual data captured by cameras people often use, such as a camera phone or wearable camera.

One of the goals of the project is to lay the foundation for computational work in both behavioral science and neuroscience.  In the behavioral science, Park sees his work as potentially addressing limitations in assessing behaviors for at-risk children, such as those with autism spectrum disorder.  In neuroscience, Park envisions potential for computational measurement of the freeranging activities of primates.

Park joins a growing list of past CS&E professors to have received the CAREER award. For more information about Park’s project and his CAREER award please visit the NSF’s award abstract.
