How many hours do TAs work per week?
Weekly hours include lab time (for lab courses), 1-2 office hours, a weekly meeting (depending on course), grading, time for reviewing material, and other course-specific duties. Weeks with no grading could be 5-8 hours, and weeks with a lot of grading could be 10-13 hours. CSCI 1115, 1135, and 1935 are usually 2-3 hours per week.
How do TA office hours work?
TAs choose their own office hours (with instructor approval) to ensure that there’s a variety of hours for students to choose from. The department reserves specific spaces for UG TAs to conduct office hours.
How are TAs supposed to grade?
Grading protocols are determined by each instructor. The instructor/Grad TA will give guidance for consistency with grading.
Do TAs have to work past finals?
TAs are frequently required to work beyond finals week in order to finish course grading.
Who supervises TAs?
Supervision and approval of time are done by the instructor of the course that you are assigned to. UG TAs track and report their own time using an electronic timesheet in MyU.
Can TAs switch courses for a new semester?
UG TA assignments are redone every term and are based on availability, openings, experience, and preference. While we do try to rehire all UG TAs who are interested in returning, returners are not guaranteed a position, especially if their availability is limited or the course they were hired for is no longer available.
What do I do if I get offered a position?
If hired, you will need to complete some steps online, so monitor your email. Our payroll staff will need you to bring in forms of ID on or before your first day of employment (passport OR Driver’s License AND Social Security Card). More information will be provided if you are offered a position.
