TA Training: Giving Effective Feedback
Introduction
Giving feedback to students is a common TA task; for example, it is often a part of grading. When, as a student, do you find feedback most useful? What are some best practices for teachers and TAs giving feedback? How can we provide feedback that is particularly useful for student learning?
Your Task
This activity consists of two steps:
- Read one or both of the following: (a) The short Faculty Focus article Feedback Strategies for Online Courses (although this focuses on online classes, much of the advice is relevant for in-person classes as well.) (b) The longer, more detailed Chronicle of Higher Education advice guide How to Give Your Students Better Feedback with Technology.
- Then think about two or three specific ways you can provide particularly effective feedback in your TA work. Write these down, and plan to use them once classes start.
