CS&E TA Training Resources

Welcome to the TA training page for CSci TAs. This academic year, since most of our classes are online, we have changed how we do TA training. Not surprisingly, the TA training will also be online, and will emphasize online teaching and learning.

There are, of course, many possible TA training resources. Which resources will be most useful to which TAs will depend on TA background, TA duties, the class, etc. There is no one-size-fits-all training. So this note contains two lists: First a list of some resources the department recommends for all TAs. And second, a longer list of  additional training resources.

Here is the first list, of recommended resources:

  • Advice from Spring 20 TAs. This document is based on Spring 20 TAs’ experiences in TAing online classes. And although this is from Spring 20, most of the advice here is relevant to our current online classes.

  • Some quick tips for online TAing.  This is a short department document with some basic advice about TAing online classes.

  • Online teaching advice guide. This guide, from the Chronicle of Higher Education, provides both general pedagogical advice, and specific tips, about online teaching.

  • Commonly used tools. This has some information on some of the commonly used tools.

  • List of some University workshops. The University has a number of workshops and tutorials, Many of these are the week before classes start, but others are during the semester, or asynchronous. We recommend TAs participate in at least a couple of these workshops or tutorials.

  • In addition to the resources above, the department recommends exploring at least a couple additional training resources, either from the list below, or from other training sources you know about. Select two or more that look most useful and interesting to you.

Here is a longer list. The resources above are included here, but the list includes many other resources as well.
